Quelle surprise!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The pathetic bundle of prickles that I had rescued from a wire cage in Houmet Souk nearly three years ago and named Herbie, has turned out to be a flirtatious Mademoiselle\u2026.. What a sweet story, and to think this adorable creature found romance, leading to motherhood, in the bountiful fruit orchards owned by her kind guardian Mohamed, who very nobly agreed to take this orphan under his wing. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Well that got our Christmas celebrations off to an enchanting start, and then on Christmas Eve, having treated ourselves to a traditional festive lunch at Joe Allen,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>we opened our present from my niece. Guess what, four stoneware hedgehog nesting bowls!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Talk about serendipity &#8211; the perfect excuse to open a bottle of Prosecco.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1980\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.camelvoyages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AmphitheatreatElJemresizeblog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1980\" class=\"wp-image-1980 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.camelvoyages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AmphitheatreatElJemresizeblog.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.camelvoyages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AmphitheatreatElJemresizeblog.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.camelvoyages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AmphitheatreatElJemresizeblog-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.camelvoyages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AmphitheatreatElJemresizeblog-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1980\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">The Amphitheatre at El Jem.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>We flew LHR &gt; Tunis on 25<sup>th<\/sup> December.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Flight TU791 was packed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>On the 27th, Belgacem, our companionable chauffeur, collected us from the Hotel Africa and drove us down south to Douz, stopping for lunch in Kairouan.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We did the same seven hour drive for our return trip to Tunis, this time stopping off at<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>El Jem, famous for its Roman Amphitheatre.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The car journey was an experiment, but one that we will repeat, as it cuts out the hassle of airports, airport transfers, finding a bagagiste, delayed internal flights, overnight stays in Tozeur or Djerba, followed by a long drive to our final destination, Douz. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Now to news from the desert, which travels fast amongst the Bedouin, who are never without their mobile phones.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just before Belgacem dropped us off at The Hotel Sahara Douz, his phone rang. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">It was Adel &#8211; on 26<sup>th<\/sup> December, his wife Najet had given birth to their third child in Kebili Hospital, a baby boy named Naeem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Mother and child were now safely back home.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>It was agreed there and then that I would visit the Saoud Family the following evening. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">I was greeted by a crowd of excited children \u2013 excited at having a brand new baby in their midst, and excited at the prospect<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>chocolate and sweeties that I would shortly be handing over to Fatma, the Grand Bedouin Matriarch of the Saoud clan, for her to divide fairly amongst the dozen or more children.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019d brought lots of chocolate \u2013 in Spring\/Autumn this is not possible as it melts, but in December it travels well and chocolate is the hugest treat. \u201cDiana, Diana\u201d they cried in unison as I stepped out of Belgacem\u2019s estate car.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is all too easy to lose count of the many cousins, and I make sure to swot up on the names written in my journal before each visit. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Khairi aged 5, and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Arifif aged 2\u00bd,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Naeem\u2019s brother and sister, took me by the hand, and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>led me into their brightly lit house.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>So affectionate, but perhaps an element of cupboard love, I wonder?!!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We stepped into the hallway, and took off our shoes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A beaming Adel kissed me on both cheeks before escorting me into the living room where a radiant Najet held court, resplendent on a raised platform large enough for to her to rest and sleep in comfort, cosy fluffy blankets at her fingertips.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Alongside her, beneath a triangular framework of wood draped in muslin and cotton, lay her baby, hidden from view in his very own miniature Bedouin tent.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Adel could not contain himself any longer, and gently lifted the drapes to reveal his tiny son wrapped in swaddling clothes. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Najet looked so very beautiful.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I was touched by the genuine warmth of her welcome.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Two smiling ladies, one her mother Selma, were sitting on the floor.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Children of all ages came running into the room, eager to see the presents I had given to Khairi and Arifif.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In a matter of moments, pieces of jigsaw were scattered all over the matting, bubbles blown into the air.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Children are the epicentre of Bedouin life, with everything and everyone revolving around them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To me, the evening represented a scene for real from the Nativity: a newly born babe, a proud but humbled mother and father, visitors bearing gifts. And outside, in the stillness of the silent starry night, slept sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits, donkeys, mules and my camel Zeydoun.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">I arranged with Adel that we would spend two days in the desert riding Zeydoun, that we would stay within sight of Sabria, and that I would return to my hotel at night.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This routine worked well all ways round.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Adel was close to his family; we did not require an extra camel to carry a tent; we avoided having to endure a bitterly cold night out in the open; and most importantly of all, it gave Khairi the opportunity to join us on his very first camel safari with a tourist, which I have named Le Petit Circuit Khairi! <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Khairi is an enthusiastic participant: handing me my rucksack; helping to saddle Zeydoun; keeping up with his Baba* (Father*) and Zeydoun, only pausing to tie up his bootlaces which kept coming undone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For the last half hour before we stopped for a very simple lunch, he was lifted on to the camel, where he sat in front of me, relishing every<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>single second!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wonder if the tradition of working with camels will still be part of his life when he reaches adulthood.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He is as bright as a button, likewise his sister Arifif who adores to dance and craves cuddles.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Such happy, unspoilt children. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Khairi helped his Baba gather wood for the fire at lunchtime, and tucked into the bread that had been baked in the ashes, first dipping the warm chunks into a bowl of golden olive oil.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Simply scrummy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Under a cloudless blue sky and warm sunshine, we padded back to Sabria, Khairi sitting in front of me on Zeydoun, doing his best<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to hold on to the front of the saddle.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was having difficulty in keeping his eyes open.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The rhythm of the camel stride can have a soporific effect on the rider, especially after a long and exciting day in the open air.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I put my arms firmly around the tired little cameleer &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>it\u2019s a mighty<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>long way up astride Zeydoun, and a mighty long way down if you were to fall!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Before I bade the Saoud Family farewell, Adel showed me their new washing machine.\u00a0This will make Najet\u2019s life much easier, and lovely for Najet to know that her Mother will stay with her for the forty days following Naeem\u2019s birth. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Geoffrey and I celebrated New Year\u2019s Eve dancing the night away at The Hotel Sahara Douz.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>On New Year\u2019s Day, we raised a glass to Zeydoun \u2013 it was ten years ago to the day that I bought my beloved camel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>May we both be allowed to grow old together\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026..<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1990\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.camelvoyages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Zeydoun-New-Years-Eve.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1990\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1990\" src=\"http:\/\/www.camelvoyages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Zeydoun-New-Years-Eve-600x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.camelvoyages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Zeydoun-New-Years-Eve-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.camelvoyages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Zeydoun-New-Years-Eve-188x250.jpg 188w, https:\/\/www.camelvoyages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Zeydoun-New-Years-Eve-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">My dear Zeydoun &#8211;
